On 20 April 2005, Renewal Solihull got their hands on their first major trophy by beating Wolverhampton and Perton Churches 6-2 in a thrilling Cup Final at Halesowen Town FC. By all accounts, Solihull had had a mediocre season, finishing fifth in Division Two. This had followed relegation from Division One. The drop had finally come after battling for three years to avoid the inevitable. Ironically, Solihull had already lost 4-1 to Wolves and Perton in the group phase of the competition and had scraped into the quarter-final equal on points with the bottom three in their group, but with a superior goal difference.
The quarter-final was another tense affair. The match had already fallen foul to the elements twice, after initially being put back because of postponements. Scott Murrell was the man to shock last year's finalists Calvary with a goal in extra time to put the yellows into the last four with a 3-2 win. A Joe Clarke brace versus AFC Zion was enough to seal Solihull's maiden appearance at the WMCFL showpiece.
So you get the picture, Solihull were at long odds to land this trophy. The final itself started at a blistering pace. 'Cup Final' tackles were flying in. Within minutes Wolves had conceded a corner. The set-piece was nodded in at the near post. The second goal was the pick of the eight. Solihull advanced into the left side of Wolves' penalty area. The ball was reverse-passed back into the path of Scott Murrell who slugged the ball from 20 yards into the bottom left of the goal. A really great finish giving Richard Webster in the W&P goal no chance.
Solihull soon added to their tally, leaving us all thinking what was going on and how many more were they going to add. I was stunned if I'm honest. Things levelled out a little and W&P grabbed one back just when they needed it; just before half time. As the teams emerged from the half time break, it was commented that the next goal will be crucial. After a steady period in the match, it was Solihull that scored it. It knocked the stuffing out of W&P and Solihull quicky added another. At 5-1 the game was effectively over. Both teams brought on their quota of substitutes to sample the experience. W&P briefly ignited a glimmer of hope before the final nail in the coffin was hammered home. 6-2 to Solihull.

WMCFL's League Cup has really taken on the aura the FA Cup used to have. The showcase final, semi's at a neutral venue, the under dog etc, etc. Those were the days....
